Egavik

These pictures were from an exploring Sunday.  Gregg and I decided to drive up to Egavik and scout out lynx tracks.  The air was really weird that day, it was foggy but it was a very dense fog and the air was cold enough that the fog condensed and froze on our goggles so we couldn't even use them.  It iced them over and after a chunk of time you could just bend your goggles and crackle the ice build up right off of them.

Crackly goggles
On the way there I spotted some ptarmigan in the trees so I veered off the trail to shoot at them.  I don't think I was aiming right because I hit one but he flew away after he fell to the ground.  The first flock of ptarmigan all got away.  So I cruised back down the hill to the trail and followed my trapping partner through the hills.  The day was just warm enough that it wasn't bad riding without goggles.  We saw a lot of bunny tracks and a few lynx tracks.  We drove on the north side of the river and then came back around to the south side of the river, which is where we really ran into some ptarmigan.  It was a blast chasing after them and hunting.  I just barely hit one and Gregg was closer to wear it was so he cruised over to it and hopped off his snow machine and chased it down.  It was hilarious.  I laughed super hard because he looked so ridiculous chasing a ptarmigan around in the deep snow.  Eventually we chased the birds into a huge flock of hundreds.  I got my fill of ptarmigan and we cruised on back to Unalakleet, where I had the joy of cleaning all the ptarmigan.
